What is YAG laser capsulotomy?

YAG laser capsulotomy is a quick laser treatment that clears clouding behind your lens implant, known as posterior capsule opacification. During cataract surgery, the new lens is placed inside a thin, clear membrane called the capsule, which is left in place to hold the lens securely. In some people, this membrane gradually becomes cloudy in the months or years afterwards.

This clouding is sometimes called after-cataract, and it is not the cataract returning, because a cataract cannot come back once it has been removed. Instead, cells on the surface of the capsule multiply and make the membrane hazy, so your vision becomes misty in a way that can feel very similar to the original cataract. It is a common and entirely normal occurrence after cataract surgery, and it is easily corrected. Symptoms include blurred or cloudy vision, glare, and difficulty in bright light. Because the treatment is so straightforward and effective, there is no need to put up with the reduction in vision once it begins to affect your daily life. A simple examination confirms whether posterior capsule opacification is the cause and whether laser treatment is suitable for you.

What YAG laser capsulotomy involves

A painless laser opens the cloudy membrane behind the lens in a few minutes, with no incision and no needles. Your ophthalmologist uses a focused laser to create a small, clear opening in the centre of the capsule., allowing light to pass through freely again so your vision clears. The lens implant itself is not affected and stays exactly where it should.

The treatment is carried out in the clinic in Yeovil while you sit at a machine similar to the one used for a routine eye examination. Drops are used to widen the pupil and sometimes to prepare the eye, and the laser part of the procedure usually takes only a few minutes. You remain seated and comfortable throughout, and there is no surgical wound to heal afterwards. Because it is an outpatient procedure, you can usually return to your normal activities the same day, although your vision may be a little blurred for a short time while the drops wear off.

What to expect on the day of your capsulotomy

YAG laser capsulotomy benefits and considerations

Most patients notice sharper, clearer vision very quickly, often within a day, with no surgical wound to heal and no need for a lengthy recovery. Because the treatment addresses the exact cause of the misty vision, the improvement is usually both immediate and lasting, and the procedure does not normally need to be repeated on the same eye.

As with any procedure there are some considerations, which your consultant will explain. You may notice new floaters for a short time after treatment, which usually settle, and the eye pressure is checked afterwards because it can rise briefly in some people. Rare risks include swelling at the centre of the retina, a small effect on the lens implant, or, very uncommonly, a change affecting the retina, and these are discussed with you beforehand so you can make an informed choice. For the great majority of people, however, YAG laser capsulotomy is a safe and highly effective way to restore the clear vision they enjoyed after their cataract surgery. If your sight has clouded again since your cataract operation, an assessment in Yeovil will confirm whether this quick treatment is right for you. Outcomes are never guaranteed, but satisfaction with this procedure is generally very high.
